SUBMITTED BY: Lynne Ellison, Jefferson County League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Jefferson County is presenting an evening program to learn about hydraulic fracturing (fracking), a method used to release trapped gas and oil from the earth.

A panel of experts with representatives from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, the oil and gas industry and the Colorado Environmental Coalition will discuss the pros and cons of this controversial method of production at 7 p.m. Wed., Feb. 22, at the Clements Community Center, 1580 Yarrow St., Lakewood 80214. The public is invited.

Topics will include:

• What is fracking and why and when is it used in Colorado?

• What are the problems and environmental consequences that may arise from fracking operations?

• What operational and design safeguards are being used to avoid these problems?

• What are the current rules and regulations regarding fracking?

There will be a question and answer session after the panel discussion. No reservations are required, but seating is limited. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. If you have questions about this meeting, please call Lynne at 303-985-5128.
