OPED: Ward 3 candidate refuses to bow out, sling mud or be silent

SUBMITTED BY: Pete Roybal, Candidate for Lakewood City Council Ward 3

John Fox, Jose Duran and the mayor visited me Saturday to express their displeasure with my exposure of the Green Gables golf course development story.  While I can respect their right to support the development (or whatever their goal), I believe the people have a right to know what’s going on with the Green Gables development and should have a voice in the county’s re-zoning process. So we will just have to disagree over the issue of public access.

As to the ultimatum that I withdraw from the race or their camp will start slinging mud – you’ve got to be kidding.  I was a soldier for twenty years.  I was willing to die for my country. Does anyone really think I’d be afraid of mudslinging?  What sort of leader would I be if I abandoned my belief in the people’s rights to participate just to avoid the threat of potential personal embarrassment?

Since my opponents will now be slinging the mud, both real and imaginary, there will be a temptation on the part of my supporters to return it in kind.  Since this is the reason why people get disgusted with politics and politicians, I am going “turn the other cheek” and continue to refuse to participate in this stuff and I ask my supporters to stay away from it as well.  Remember if you roll around in the mud with the pigs you just end up as dirty as the pigs.
