Police trying to confirm ID of woman found in frigid lot

LAKEWOOD – Police are trying to positively identify a woman who was found unconscious and unresponsive in a local parking lot before dawn Wednesday.

A number of tips from citizens provided a tentative identification, which detectives were working to confirm at mid-day.

Police responding to a report of a person possibly in need of help found the woman at the Highland Square Apartment parking lot near West 12th Avenue and Balsam Street about 5 a.m., according to LPD spokesman Steve Davis. The woman had no apparent injuries, but was in a state of severe hypothermia when paramedics arrived, Davis said.

The woman, who is believed to be in her late 40s, was taken to an area hospital. Her condition was not available.
Davis said investigators are unsure of how long she may have been down in the parking lot in the sub-zero weather. She was wearing only a gray T-shirt, sweat pants and white shoes when police found her. A Dallas Cowboys jackets was on the ground near the victim.

The woman, who police said is Caucasian, has a “slight deformity” in her right hand, Davis said, and she is missing her front teeth. The woman also has what police describe as two “dots” tattooed on her upper left arm. She has brown eyes and shoulder-length brown hair, according to the description released by police.

“At this time police have no evidence to suggest any criminal activity had occurred,” Davis said.

“Detectives say that many tips have come in from the public and that they feel they have tentatively identified the female,” according to a statement released by Davis shortly after noon. “Her identity will not be released however until detectives can positively identify her by fingerprints or other means.”
