OPED: GSA’s ‘concern’ for environment only a smokescreen

SUBMITTED BY: D. Carson

Chris Jones’ letter (”Wildlife Perishes at the Federal Center”) voices the same concerns and constant frustration I have experienced with GSA when, prior to the completion of the Environmental Impact Statement, it started killing numerous species of wildlife as an “improvement” to the DFC grounds.

GSA has constantly ignored public comments and concerns about keeping open space undisturbed for wildlife. GSA, along with the City of Lakewood, is blinded by potential profits from unnecessary and unwanted land development.  Both have no true regard for the cost to the wildlife, the community, and future generations.

GSA is like a magician who uses smoke and mirrors to trick a concerned public into believing that it truly cares about the environment and what the public wants while it continues to do just the opposite and hopes that no one notices it.  Eventually, we figure out how the trick is done.

Unfortunately, more wildlife continues to suffer and die (if not directly killed by GSA and its contractors), and we, the taxpayers, our children, and future generations, lose something very precious to our community.

GSA hopes that planting a few trees will cover up the widespread carnage it continues to create.  Don’t fall for it.  If you value wildlife and open space and want them to remain on the Denver Federal Center for future generations, please contact:  Sally Mayberry, GSA Public Affairs Officer, Denver Federal Center 240, Denver, CO 80225, phone 303-236-8000 x2322, cell phone303-941-7637, Blackberry PIN 30E2ADC6, fax 303-236-3606, emailsally.mayberry@gsa.gov and contact Mayor Bob Murphy, Lakewood Mayor’s Office, phone 303-987-7040, emailbmurphy@lakewood.org.
