DA’s Safety Fair makes its second annual appearance Saturday

LAKEWOOD – The annual Jeffco District Attorney’s Safety Fair will give folks a chance to better assure their safety, both physical and fiscal at the County Fairgrounds Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

And it’s free.

The fair, in its second year, has a number of attractions for the youngsters as well as information and precautionary tips and tools for parents, senior citizens and other residents.

For the kids there will be a bicycle rodeo with a free helmet for each participating youngster. There also will be fingerprint and DNA kits for kids, hugs from the crime-fighting dog McGruff, air castles as well as big boats and fast cars for the youngsters to examine up-close.

On the more serious side, there will be programs for kids who witness or experience bullying.

For the adults, the Safety Fair will offer free small electronics recycling, document shredding and prescription recycling. Folks also can get a free credit report, printed on-site and along with consultation with bank officers.

“This event is not only about crime prevention and how to keep yourself from becoming a victim of crime, it’s also about helping the community face any concerns they might have about keeping safe as they go about their daily lives.” District Attorney Scott Storey siad.

The event also will feature more than 65 booths, live safety presentations and demonstrations. Food also will be available at the Safety Fair, which also is sponsored by 9News, 1stBank, Seniors’ Resource Center, A-1 Electronics Recycling, Iron Mountain, Wells Fargo Bank, SaveAndInvest.org, The Prime Time for Seniors and Home Instead Senior Care.

“This free community event offers safety tips and tools for the entire family – whether you are interested in staying safe at home; during recreational activities; general health and well-being; or have concerns about your kids going back to school – this is the place to be,” said Pam Russell, spokeswoman for the DA’s Office. “There will be information and resources for seniors, adults, parents, teens and younger kids. Take advantage of car seat and driver safety; ID theft and fraud prevention; Internet safety; tools for investment and financial planning; pet and wildlife concerns, and much, much more.”

Seniors also can pick up a free 911 cell phones and adults with aging parents are aging can obtain lists of resources and information will be available for teens on Internet and cell-phone safety

On medical issues, Exempla Lutheran’s staff will address sleep disorders and the fair also will offer programs on drug abuse.

Jefferson County’s Board of County Commissioners last week proclaimed Saturday as Consumer Safety Awareness Day in Jefferson County and is encouraging citizens to promote safety in their homes, neighborhoods and communities by participating in the District Attorney’s Safety Fair.
