OPED: Impound initiative filed to protect accident victims

Following a year of court challenges and appeals by illegal alien advocates like Common Cause and the ACLU, the car towing and bonding ordinance will come before Lakewood voters this November.

This important issue is about taking unlicensed drivers off Lakewood streets. Suspended drivers and illegal aliens are driving in record numbers and they’re a safe driver’s worst nightmare. Unlicensed drivers are statistically the most dangerous and, in a one-two punch, they’re uninsurable forcing you to spend hundreds on additional coverage annually. Tragically, when an unlicensed driver hits you causing catastrophic injuries, it can bankrupt you and it wasn’t even your fault.

This ordinance requires Lakewood police to impound all vehicles driven by unlicensed drivers. This lowers crime as felons and illegal gangs don’t ride the bus. And don’t forget, the mean streets of Denver are just across Sheridan where four of ten drivers were found to be unlicensed.

As if any more reasons were needed, this ordinance makes money! The Denver City Budget Office calculates that each impound lot produces $400,000 from the car auction. It will work the same in Lakewood.

Of course, because it makes so much sense, Council will probably oppose it.
