RTD cancels plan to close 6th/Indiana ramps Thursday
LAKEWOOD – Regional Transportation District construction officials have canceled a planned Thursday night closure of the West 6th Avenue/Indiana Street area and will reschedule the work, the agency announced Wednesday afternoon.
The announcement gave no reason for the change in plans other than citing “unforeseen circumstances” in the FasTracks West Corridor light rail construction schedule.
“Prior notification of the new dates for closures will be given as soon as information becomes available,” the RTD Announcement said.
FasTracks is RTD’s voter-approved transit program to expand rail and bus service throughout the RTD service area. FasTracks will build 122 miles of commuter rail and light rail, 18 miles of bus rapid transit service, add 21,000 new parking spaces, redevelop Denver Union Station and redirect bus service to better connect the eight-county District. The FasTracks investment initiative is projected to create more than 10,000 jobs during the height of construction, and will pump billions of dollars into the regional economy.
The latest round of FasTracks-related closures began last Friday, when crews began work to move the off ramp from West 6th Avenue to traffic exiting eastbound to West Colfax Avenue to accommodate changes required by the new light rail bridge. That ramp closed about dawn Monday.
Crews also planned to close all lanes of westbound 6th Avenue at Indiana Street Thursday, rerouting traffic via the 6th Avenue exit ramps and entrance ramps at Indiana Street. When rescheduled, that work also will close Indiana Street northbound between the detour ramps.
