JEFFERSON COUNTY – County Commissioners Kathy Hartman, Faye Griffin, and Kevin McCasky presented Seniors’ Resource Center (SRC) with a proclamation declaring May as Older Americans Month on Tuesday, May 25.

Adult Protective Services and the Jefferson County Council on Aging (JCCoA) joined SRC at the Jefferson County Administration building for the presentation.

“Recognizing May as Older Americans Month each year is a great way for not only communities, but the entire nation, to come together to salute older adults and to help them live as independent and with as much dignity as possible,” said SRC President/CEO John Zabawa.

SRC, in partnership with JCCoA, celebrated the month with the 12th Annual Salute to Senior Heroes Award Reception on Thursday, May 20 at Lakeview Senior Living. The event recognizes the efforts of Jefferson County’s senior citizens who volunteer to make their communities a better place to live.

Older Americans Month (originally termed “Senior Citizens Month”) was established in 1963. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter designated the change in name to Older Americans Month. It is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other such activities.

This year’s theme is “Age Strong! Live Long!” Click to learn more about the observance at the web site of the federal Administration on Aging.

SRC participated in four senior resource informational fairs and exhibitions throughout the month, including the Adams County Senior Conference (May 6), Denver Parks and Recreation Spring into Health Fair (May 13), 9th Annual National Employee & Health Fitness Day at Buckley Air Force Base (May 19), and the Salute to Seniors Exhibition at the Colorado Convention Center (May 26).

A revised SRC display board and informational table have been on display at the Jefferson County Administration building throughout the entire month as well.

SRC is a 32-year-old leading non-profit provider of person-focused, coordinated services to enhance independence, dignity and quality of life for seniors.
