DOC inmate accused in Lakewood sex assault

JEFFERSON COUNTY – A 43 year-old man in state custody is accused in the sexual assault of a Lakewood woman last summer, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors earlier this week announced they have filed a batch of felony charges against 43-year-old Arthur Louis Martinez in connection with the July assault, which occurred near the victim’s home as she walked alone near Green Mountain.

Martinez faces second degree kidnapping with sexual assault, a class two felony; sexual assault using force, a class three felony; sexual assault using threat, a class four felony; robbery, a class four felony; and third degree assault, a class one misdemeanor.

The crime occurred about 9:30 p.m. July 24, in a residential neighborhood near the woman’s home. Prosecutors accuse Martinez of being the man who waited behind a bush before jumping out and attacking the victim, who told investigators she did not know her attacker.

Records filed in Jefferson County District Court indicate the attacker punched the young woman in the face as he sexually assaulted her, then stole her MP3 player before fleeing on foot.

The 29-year old victim ran to a nearby house after the attack and pounded on the door until someone answered her frantic plea for help and called Lakewood police.

The attacker was described as possibly Hispanic with a shaved head about 5-foot 8-inches tall with a “stocky” build.

By February Lakewood Police investigators compiled enough evidence to obtain an arrest warrant for Martinez. His bond was set in the amount of $50,000 in the case and his first court appearance in the case is scheduled for April 16. Martinez is currently in the custody of the Department of Corrections on an unrelated conviction, but a search of the agency’s inmate location database did not list him.
