Sheriff’s Office seeks information on sex-assault suspect
James C. Bird
JEFFERSON COUNTY – Sheriff’s Office investigators checking out multiple allegations of sexual assault on children involving James C. Bird fear the suspect may have assaulted other youngsters, as well.
Bird, meanwhile, is believed to have left the United States and dectives have not been able to contact him, said Jackie Kelley, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.
Deputies have an active arrest warrant for Bird listing four counts of sexual assault on a child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Kelley said Bird was already out of the country when the warrant was issued.
Bird allegedly sexually assaulted two teen-age boys who were left in his care by their mother, according to investigators. He also provided the teens with alcohol and drugs, according to the investigators.
Bird apparently befriended the woman and her three sons in 2004 the suspect after meeting them through a church in Aurora and began spending a lot of time with the boys, ranging in ages 14 to 17 years old.
The mother developed trust in Bird and the relationship that Bird had with her sons, believing that a male influence in their lives was important, according to Kelley. Eventually, the mother consented to let her sons stay overnight and spend weekends with the Bird at his homes in Aurora and Jeffco.
The suspect “essentially became a second caregiver,” providing money for such things as clothing, braces and many other personal items, according to Kelley
But in September, one of the boys told his mother that Bird had sexually assaulted him and one of his brothers on multiple occasions over the years.
The mother reported the allegations to authorities immediately and investigators in November Jeffco investigators executed a search warrant at Bird’s home. Evidence collected in that search prompted investigators to believe that there may be additional victims of crimes that have gone undetected and unreported.
“Bird has spent a large portion of his adult life engaging in a variety of interests and activities that involve juvenile boys. He has lived in Douglas County, Aurora and Jeffco,” according to a Sheriff’s Office news release issued Wednesday.
Anyone with information regarding Bird should contact Jeffco Sheriff’s Office Investigator Matt Clark, (303) 271-5640.
