Lakewood police nab bank robbery suspect

LAKEWOOD – A robbery suspect was arrested Tuesday as he pedaled a bicycle away from the scene of a bank heist Tuesday morning, police said.

Police received a call about a bank robbery at the Liberty Savings Bank, 7575 W. Jewell Ave., at 9:44 a.m. and were on the scene within a minute. Witnesses told officers that a man brandishing a handgun had robbed the bank, taking an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing on a bicycle.

About five minutes later, police officers spotted a man matching the detailed description of the armed robber and confronted him as he rode his bicycle near West Florida Avenue and Carr Street. When officers searched the suspect, they found the handgun and cash, said Lakewood Police Department spokesman Steve Davis.

Police arrested 41-year-old Dion K. Morgan of Lakewood on suspicion of armed robbery and could face other charges, as well, Davis said.

Morgan will be taken to the Jefferson County Jail and is expected to be taken before a District Court judge as early as Wednesday.

Police have not released Morgan’s mug shot because it might be used in photo line-ups during the investigation.
