Driver dies after pickups collide on Kipling

Wreckage from a fatal two-vehicle collision blocks part of S. Kipling Parkway.
LAKEWOOD – A man died and another was injured in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of S. Kipling Parkway and West Kentucky Avenue Monday morning, police said.
A traffic signal pole was knocked down in the 8:30 a.m. accident and southbound traffic on Kipling still was being detoured around the wreckage onto Kentucky Avenue shortly before noon.
Police also remained at the debris-strewn scene as they conducted their investigation.
The identities of the two victims, both of whom were taken to area hospitals, had not been released. One was pronounced dead a short time after arriving at the hospital. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office was withholding his identification pending notification of relatives.
Police had no word on the condition of the other driver and the name of the hospital where he was being treated was not immediately available.
There were no passengers in either of the vehicles, both of which were severely damaged, according to Steve Davis, Lakewood Police spokesman.
“Initial indications were that one of the vehicles may have been northbound on Kipling Parkway and turned left into the path of the oncoming southbound vehicle,” Davis said in a mid-morning press release.
Davis said investigators are awaiting results of tests to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
This report will be updated as more details become available.
