Ex-Teacher Admits Sexual Assault
LAKEWOOD MAN SENTENCED IN DOG’S DEATH: Ryan Cullen Hayes last week was sentenced to two years of probation on each of four misdemeanor counts for shooting his neighbor’s dog last summer.
The sentences will run concurrently. Hayes also must complete 100 hours of community service, attend anger management classes and submit to a substance abuse evaluation as a condition of his probation.
A jury in February found Hayes guilty of two counts of reckless endangerment, a count of prohibited use of a weapon while under the influence and one count of animal cruelty.
Prosecutors said Hayes was drunk while a neighbor and her dog, miniature a Jack Russell Terrier named Patches, were visiting his mother at her Lakewood home.
After Hayes excused himself to take a shower, the women heard a shot and found the dog lying dead.
Hayes claimed the dog accidentally discharged a .357 magnum handgun that was on the floor.
EX-TEACHER ADMITS SEXUAL ASSAULT: A former Lakewood High School substitute teacher and coach faces up to 12 years in prison when he is sentenced for three felony counts including sexual assault as a pattern of behavior.
Jon William McCarthy, 32, of Lakewood, entered guilty pleas to that charge and three charges of stalking in connection with a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student at the school. He relationship took place between October 2006 and October 2007 when McCarthy was working at the school as a security guard and student teacher, investigators said. McCarthy later became a substitute teacher and track coach at LHS.
The victim, who now lives in another state, told one of her friends about the relationship and, in April 2008, another student teacher at the school overheard a group of students discussing the relationship. She reported what she had heard to her supervisor and Lakewood Police investigators built the case against McCarthy.
He was arrested in May 2008.
McCarthy’s sentence, which will be imposed July 42, will include Sex Offender Intensive Supervision, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
WOMAN NABBED BY LPD PLEADS GUILTY: A woman arrested in a statewide crime spree that ended after an investigation by Lakewood Police pled guilty to theft and receiving and a second offense of possession of a controlled substance, both felonies.
Brandy P. Dippel, 32, could get as much as a dozen years in prison when she is sentenced in Jefferson County District Court June 1.
Dippel and her boyfriend, Michael Robert Chard, 30, are suspects in more than 100 crimes in and around Lakewood, Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs.
Lakewood Police arrested the pair after an investigation allegedly linked them to stolen vehicles, credit cards, firearms, electronic equipments and thousands of other items, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
Chard is awaiting trial.
